🏆CC🪷🔵 | Wellbeing | You Do Not Have to Earn the Rest Teach Clear, 02/12/201811/07/2026 I made dinner. I cleaned the kitchen. I helped my child with the thing that takes forty minutes and feels like four hours. I folded the laundry that was supposed to get folded yesterday. I answered the phone. I made the bed. I wiped the counter. I wiped the counter again because there was a mark on the counter and I could not look at it without seeing it. And then I sat down. And the guilt came. Not the exhaustion. The guilt. The specific, quiet voice that says: you could be doing something useful. You could be writing. You could be planning. You could be fixing the thing that is broken. You could be. You could be. You could be. And I just sat. The body is not a machine I have been running on the shape of a machine for years. Input. Output. Input. Output. Feed the child. Make the meal. Clean the space. Answer the question. Do the thing. And if the machine stops, the machine breaks. That is the story I was told. That is the story I believed. But the body is not a machine. The body is the thing that got sick from not letting the work out. The body is the thing that stopped the car in the parking lot because the words would not stay inside. The body is the thing that knows, in the jaw and the shoulders and the hands, when it has had enough. And when the body has had enough, it does not need a reward. It does not need to “deserve” the rest. It does not need to finish the list first. It needs to stop. And it is allowed to stop. In the middle of the list. With the counter not quite clean. With the laundry not quite folded. With the thing that takes forty minutes still sitting on the table. The rest is the baseline I used to think rest was a luxury. Something you bought. A candle. A bath. A “self-care Sunday” that was just another to-do item in a different font. Something you did after the work was done. And the work was never done. So the rest never happened. And the body paid for it. The jaw. The shoulders. The 3 a.m. waking. The cold cup of coffee at 5:40 because I was already up, already going, already performing the shape of a person who is fine. But the rest is not the reward. The rest is the baseline. The rest is the thing that keeps the body in the body. The rest is the thing that lets the next day be a next day instead of a continuation of the same day, over and over, with no break, no breath, no edge. So here is what I do now. I sit down. I do not open the laptop. I do not pick up the phone. I do not “do” anything. I just sit. And I let the guilt run. I do not fight it. I do not argue with it. I just let it run, and I stay in the chair, and I breathe. And after a while, the guilt gets quieter. Not gone. Quieter. And the body unclenches. The jaw. The shoulders. The hands. And I am still here. And the child is still here. And the counter is still not quite clean. And that is fine. That is the whole thing. You are allowed to stop I am not going to tell you that you are “enough.” I am going to tell you something smaller and more specific. You are allowed to stop. In the middle of the sentence. In the middle of the list. In the middle of the day. You are allowed to put the spoon down and sit and do nothing and not feel like you are failing. You are not failing. You are resting. And the rest is not a luxury. It is the thing that keeps you in the body long enough to do the next thing. And the next thing will be there when you are ready. It is not going anywhere. The counter will still be there. The laundry will still be there. The thing that takes forty minutes will still be there. And you will be here. In the body. In the chair. In the quiet. And that is enough. That is the whole practice. Sit down. Stop. Breathe. Let the guilt run. Stay. 🎧 If you would rather listen to this one, the audio is here. Take it if it is for you.
