🏆CC🧭🔵 | Self-Growth | Reclaiming Creative Freedom Through Self-Taught Design Teach Clear, 02/03/202011/07/2026 I opened the file last night to make a pin. Just a pin. A small square with a color and a sentence and a leaf. And before I even picked a color, the old voice showed up. The one that says: you are not a designer. You do not have a degree in graphic design. You do not have a portfolio. You are going to make something that looks amateur, and people are going to see it, and they are going to know. I closed the tab. And then I opened it again. And I picked a color. Forest green. The one I have been using for months. The one that feels like the room. And I put the sentence in the middle. And I looked at it. And my body said: yes. That is right. The space above is right. The space below is right. The size of the letter is right. I did not measure it. I did not run it through a grid. I just looked at it, and I knew. The eye was already trained I have been looking at pages for twenty years. Not as a designer. As a teacher. I made handouts. I made worksheets. I made the thing that a kid looks at and either thinks “I can do this” or “I cannot do this” before they even read the first word. I knew the difference. I could feel it in my hands when I was arranging the text. If the space was too tight, the kid’s shoulders went up. If the font was too small, the kid leaned in and then gave up. I knew. I did not have a name for it. I just knew. And then I learned four languages. And that gave me something else. An eye for rhythm. For the space between the words. For the breath. A line of text that is too long does not just look wrong. It sounds wrong. You can hear it. The line is holding its breath too long. Break it. Let it exhale. I have been training this eye my whole life. I just did not have a certificate for it. And I did not need one. The jargon is the wall, not the door There is a language that surrounds design that is not about design. It is about making you feel small so that you will buy the thing. The “brand identity system.” The “visual hierarchy framework.” The “design token library.” None of those words mean what they sound like. They are the wall. They are the thing that makes you think you are not allowed in the room. But the room is just a screen. And the screen is just a color and a sentence and a space. And you already know what goes where. You have known for years. You just did not have permission to trust it. So here is the permission. You do not need to master the software. You do not need to hire the agency. You do not need to take the course. You need to open the file, pick the color that feels like the room, put the sentence in the middle, and look at it. And if your body says “yes,” it is done. That is the whole thing. Make it. It is yours. I am going to make the pin. It is going to be a small square with a color and a sentence and a leaf. And it is going to be true. Not perfect. Not “agency-grade.” True. And that is the only standard that matters in this room. 🎧 If you would rather listen to this one, the audio is here.
