🏆CC🧭🔵 | Self-Growth | Barnacles in Our Life: A Metaphor Coach Clear, 01/28/201811/08/2026 A boat in the ocean picks up barnacles over time. They attach to the hull. They are small, one at a time, and you do not notice them accumulating. But they add weight. They slow the boat down. And if you do not remove them, the boat eventually cannot move at all. That is what happens to us. The barnacles are the things that attach over time: a belief you picked up at fourteen and never questioned. A relationship you stay in because leaving feels harder than staying. A job you are in because you have been in it long enough. A way of moving your body that you have tolerated for so long you forgot it was a choice. They are not dramatic. That is the problem. They are quiet. They are normal. They are “just how things are.” And they are specific to you. Your barnacles are not my barnacles. What slows one person down is invisible to another. What to do about them Name them. You cannot remove what you have not identified. Sit with the question: where in my life am I moving slower than I should be? Not “what is wrong with me.” Where am I carrying weight that is not mine to carry? Look at every area. Not just the obvious ones. Physical. Emotional. Spiritual. Work. Environment. Relationships. How you talk to yourself. How you eat. How you move. How you spend money. How you spend time. All of it. The barnacles are in all of it. Remove them. This is not a metaphor that ends at the metaphor. You actually have to do the thing. End the conversation. Cancel the subscription. Leave the room. Say no. Forgive yourself for the version of you that stayed too long. Detach from the situation that is no longer serving you. This is not comfortable. It is not “self-care” in the candle-and-tea sense. It is sometimes brutal. But a barnacle that stays on the hull is a barnacle that stays on the hull. It does not fall off on its own. Keep the hull clean. This is the part most people skip. You remove a barnacle, and if the conditions are the same, new ones attach. The same environment, the same patterns, the same unexamined beliefs. So the work is not one-time. It is ongoing. You check the hull. You scrub what you find. You repeat. You do not do it alone. A boat has a crew. Not because the boat is weak, but because the ocean is large. You need people who will tell you what you cannot see from inside the hull. A friend who says “that is not a value, that is a habit.” A mentor who has already removed the barnacle you are currently carrying. Someone who will not let you rationalize. Point the boat somewhere. Once the weight is off, the question becomes: where are you going? Not a five-year plan. Not a mission statement. Just a direction. A choice that lines up with what you actually want, not what you were told to want. The question Think about your life. Go back as far as you can remember. Where are the barnacles? Not in one area. In every area. Physical. Emotional. Spiritual. Work. Environment. Relationships. How you see yourself. How you treat your body. How you spend your money. How you spend your time. You do not have to fix them today. You just have to see them. That is where it starts. Not with a scrub. With a look. ♦ ♦ ♦ 🎧 If you would rather listen to this one, the audio is here.
